Among the key elements of this arrangement are the contrasts, based on the exposition of the Afro-Cuban 12/8 and the double time swing 4/4 pulse-lines. The free-flowing, yet precise playing of the rhythm section is essential to the accurate performance of these parts.
The fast-tempo parts of the arrangement require special attention to the articulation,
rhythm and dynamics. The drummer should intently follow all the ensemble figures, while also gradually building the dynamics, intensity and activity, leading into the final powerful ensemble blast.
